Health Benefits of An Infrared Sauna

If you’re looking for a way to relax and improve your health, an infrared sauna session at Live Fit may be the answer! Let’s chat about the many health benefits of infrared saunas and how they can help you achieve better overall health. From detoxification to improved circulation, infrared saunas have been proven to provide a variety of health benefits that can help you feel your best. Read on to learn more about the amazing benefits of infrared saunas!

What exactly is an Infrared Sauna? The science behind infrared saunas is a little over my head but an infrared sauna is a type of dry heat sauna that utilizes the power of infrared light to generate the heat which penetrates deep into the body. This allows your body to then naturally emit the infrared radiation which increases blood circulation and energy throughout the body. This helps you to detoxify and reduce inflammation. This can help you improve your muscle tone, sleep better, lower your risk of heart disease, and more!

Infrared saunas have also been proven to relieve pain from arthritis or injuries, improve mood and mental clarity, increase endurance and lung capacity, boost metabolism, and more.

What is Pilates?

Are you looking for a new workout that enhances strength, muscle tone, flexibility and improves aches and pains? Pilates is a terrific full body workout that is easily accessible for everyone.

About Pilates:

Pilates first appeared in the early 1900’s after being created by Joseph Pilates as an aid in the healing of dancers injuries. It soon became clear, nevertheless, that this activity would be helpful to the average individual. We all have a specific way that we stand, walk, move, and sit at our desks which can overwork our muscles this can lead to imbalances that can be balanced with Pilates.

The Pilates method emphasizes the use of the muscles in the low back and belly, precise movement patterns, and regulated breathing. The combination of these exercises emphasize core strength rather than muscle size. Each of these are emphasized by a Live Fit certified instructor.

Pilates Benefits:

Pilates is therapeutic and preventative because it isolates, calms, and strengthens muscular areas using control and breathing. Additionally, it helps strengthen your posture and alignment, resulting in a straighter, more powerful gait.

Pilates helps you feel better which increases wellbeing, much like yoga. Your core gets stronger, which reduces back pain brought on by weak, tight, or misaligned muscles. Major advantages can result from better posture building these muscles can help avoid hunching and compressing your lower back which can make it more difficult to breathe and digest food.

Why Does My Elbow Hurt?

Have you ever woken up in the morning and your elbow hurts? Or have you pulled the detergent off the shelf and gotten a shock from your elbow? Looking back, you don't remember hurting yourself and you didn't hit your elbow on anything? You start to worry, what could be causing the elbow pain?

If you can rule out a one-time injury like a sprain or fracture, tennis or golfer's elbow is very likely culprit. Despite the name, you don't have to play any sport to sustain this injury. These are simply forms of tendinitis caused by overuse of the elbow.

Now that you've self diagnosed yourself (thanks Internet), what can be done to treat these injuries? Rest first, try to limit activities that strain the elbow. This can include anything that requires arm twisting. Then ice the elbow for 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day. Finally, you can stretch and strengthen the elbow and the muscles around it. Our Live Fit Personal Trainers are happy to help you with exercises and stretches to get rid of your elbow pain and keep it from coming back!

Staying Hydrated

August is here, and unfortunately we don’t seem to be getting any relief from this heat! Staying hydrated is extremely important every day but especially when it is so hot. You want to drink half your body weight in ounces plus 16 ounces for each hour of exercise. That can seem like a daunting task if you do not enjoy water so let’s chat about ways to stay hydrated in this weather.

  • Infuse your Water: try adding fruit to your water, my favorite is either lemon or cucumber and lime this can make drinking more enjoyable.

  • Eat High Water Content Fruit: watermelon is great to eat to stay hydrated in the summer and it tastes great too. Sometimes you just feel full from water so fruit is a great option.

  • Invest in a Quality Water Bottle: find a water bottle that keeps your drink cold, has an easy drinking spout, and is easy to carry with you. Convenance is always an excuse when I ask people why they don’t drink more water, don’t let that be you!!

How do you stay hydrated in the summer?

July 4th Recipes

How are you celebrating the Forth of July? I feel like with most holidays the Forth puts a lot of focus on food! BBQ’s are common this weekend, do you have any go to recipes that you prepare?

I am thankful for gatherings in the summer because I think on average there are lighter and fresher food options than winter holidays. I love any type of fresh fruit salad, balsamic vinegar has a special place in my heart so tomato/mozzarella salad is always a go to, and thankfully many BBQ’s focus around a fun meat option! My brother in law smoked chicken thighs last weekend and they were amazing and a lighter option than a hamburger or hot dog.

Below are a few recipes I am going to try out this weekend, let us know what you are making!

Healthy Pasta Salad: We had something similar to this last weekend so I am going to try to recreate it by using this recipe.

Pulled “Chicken”: We are doing this to make sure we have left overs for the week!

Margaritas: Is it unpatriotic to have a margarita on July 4th?!

Happy Summer!

Summer is finally here in Overland Park! Because school is out, the kids will be home, and many of us will begin to neglect our own routines. Is it more difficult to get your workout in during the summer, or is it easier because you can get outside?

My workout routine seems to change throughout the year depending on the weather. Obviously, I am more active during the summer because I am working in the yard, walking the dog, or kayaking on the lake! These are all excellent forms of exercise, but we must not overlook our stretching and rehabilitation routines!

Unfortunately, we see more injuries in the summer and fall because we try new activities; continuing to see your personal trainer is a great way to prevent these injuries. Your personal trainer can provide function tips to keep you safe while participating in summer activities. Even better, start training for specific activities a few months in advance so you are strong and capable.

What are your plans for the summer? Have you started training? Our certified personal trainers would love to help!

Summer Workouts

Do you have a favorite workout during the summer? Does your workout routine change with the season?

My workout routine changes depending how much I can get outside, unfortunately Kansas seems to have skipped spring and it has been incredibly hot this week!

Working out in the heat takes adjusting to so make sure you start slow and work your way up to your normal outdoor workout! Also, make sure to increase your water intake if you were sweating. You typically need an extra 16oz of water for every hour of exercise and this is extremely important if your working out in the heat.

Deceiving Workout Equipment

What is the most innocent looking piece of equipment at the gym that ends up being a killer?! I think the light weights that are such happy colors can be so deceiving! The Pilates Ring also quickly comes to mind as being so innocent looking and then literally being the death of my thighs. Both of these pieces of equipment can make your muscles burn in ways you never thought possible!

What piece of equipment do you dread seeing your personal trainer (or even you) has chosen for your workout? Are you secretly happy to feel the burn?

If a piece of equipment doesn’t come to mind contact us today and we will put you with a trainer that is very creative in their workout style and we promise the next time we ask this question you will have an answer!

Tips to Spring into Fitness!

I am allowed to be a little cheesy every once in a while so let’s SPRING INTO FITNESS and chat about ways to kick start your fitness regimen this spring! My favorite thing about spring is the weather; we can get outside for our exercise, try new things, most of which are FREE!

  • Try a new local park! You can walk/run or utilize the playground equipment to build a workout! One of my favorite parks in the Kansas City area is Shawnee Mission Park. There are amazing paved trails, dirt trails, and you can even rent kayaks or paddle boards.

  • Switch up your routine with your friends! Instead of grabbing drinks on the patio walk to the coffee shop down the street!

  • Sign Up for a local race. This will motivate you to begin training, and allow you to support a great cause. Royals Charity is hosting a 5k in July which would give you plenty of time to train!

  • Walk during your lunch hour! Bring a quick and healthy lunch and then get outside for some exercise!

  • Explore a new part of the city. Walk the main street, hit up the park, and try an outdoor activity. Parkville is a great town just north of the city that is right along the river. You can take a nice walk along the river, hit a few shops on main street, and then try mini golfing!

How are you planning to spring into your fitness routine? Let us know if you need any assistance from one of our certified personal trainers.

Do I Have Time For Personal Training

How often do you mutter the phrase “I just don’t have enough time” throughout the day?

Early morning you skip your meditations because you don’t have enough time.

Mid morning you skip filling up your water bottle because you don’t have enough time.

Mid day you skip a healthy lunch because you don’t have enough time.

After work you skip your workout because you don’t have enough time.

Dinner time you skip a healthy dinner because you don’t have enough time.

Before bed you skip your stretching routine because you don’t have enough time.

After thinking back through your day make a list of what things you did have time for…scrolling Instagram for 20 minutes, hitting the Starbucks line for coffee, gossiping with “Rose from Accounting”. Our time is so important but what is even more important is how we schedule our time, making sure we fill our days with productive habits is what is most important!

I think there are multiple reasons that working with a personal trainer is beneficial but one of the more unconventional reasons I think working with a personal trainer is important is time. A personal training session is scheduled, you have some one waiting for you, someone to keep you accountable. This is something that can make a huge difference in the success of your health and fitness journey!

Live Fit is thankful to have multiple certified personal trainers that work at all different times of the day and the week to help service all of our clients! If you are interested in learning more please Call Today!
